About me

Hello, my name is Jenna Weston, and I am a Florida State University Alumni with a bachelor's in meteorology and an earned certification in emergency management. My passion for meteorology encouraged me to pursue a career in emergency management because not only can I work with natural disasters, I can help people in the process as well. I am specifically interested in the response and recovery phases of emergency management. The two photos I have attached here are from Hurricane Delta in Jennings, Louisiana 2020. I had the opportunity to experience it first-hand and document the damage.

Leon County Emergency Management, Tallahassee, FL

Intern

08/2022-05/2023

  • Participated in a partial activation for Hurricane Ian. During this, I attended conference calls with the National Weather Service, all 67 counties in Florida, the state emergency management director, and NGOs. I also entered missions and requests into Web EOC for different organizations around Tallahassee, for example, FAMU was requesting emergency management personnel and the Kearney Center was requesting more cots for sheltering.

  • Created a spreadsheet with all the contact information for the agencies involved in the Big Bend Community Active and Disaster Organization. I reached out to those who had missing information on the spreadsheet and filled it in as they responded. I also reformatted the county’s emergency management checklist in case of a flood. I formatted it into tables with who is the responsible party, what their task is, and their progress. I have helped format and write the after-action report for the Florida Governor’s Inauguration. I worked independently on choosing which core capabilities fit the objective of what we needed to improve for future events.
  • Attended many conference meetings and training sessions held in the office. I participated in a conference for the Big Bend Community Organization Active and Disaster, a training course to become a certified incident commander, and all the meetings prior to and after the governor’s inauguration.

  • Supervised my advisor and his colleagues; I often have one-on-one meetings where they teach me software that is used in the office. We regularly check multiple websites for information on natural disasters occurring near our area.
